Turfmesh: The High-Performance Grass Reinforcement System

Turfmesh is a highly effective, robust plastic mesh designed to reinforce grassed areas subject to heavy foot traffic or vehicle use. This system prevents rutting and damage to the turf, ensuring long-term surface stability without sacrificing the natural look of the environment. It is the go-to solution for creating durable, grassed access routes and parking zones.

How Turfmesh protects

Turfmesh works by creating a strong interlock with the grass roots as they grow through the mesh filaments, greatly increasing the overall load-bearing capacity of the turf. This reinforced structure can handle loads up to 8 tonnes per axle (depending on the variant chosen), making it perfect for overflow car parks, emergency access, and green driveways. The unique oscillated mesh pattern provides increased tensile strength, and the slip-resistant surface is a key safety feature for pedestrians. As a chemically inert and rot-resistant solution, Turfmesh ensures your project stays green and stable for years to come while remaining SUDS compliant.

Standards & Testing

Turfmesh is a quality-assured product, providing you with confidence in its long-term performance and reliability.
• Quality Assurance: Manufactured as an ISO 9001 quality assured product.
• Safety Testing: The unique slip-resistant surface has been independently tested to BS 7976-2, confirming its superior friction characteristics.
• Compliance: Fully compliant with SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) requirements.

Turfmesh is a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) mesh product specifically engineered for grass reinforcement. When installed, it immediately provides a stable, load-distributing layer over the existing turf. As the grass grows, the roots intertwine with the mesh filaments, creating a natural composite structure that can withstand heavy traffic. This action of reinforcing the grass root zone is key to preventing soil compaction and ensuring the grass remains healthy and green. Available in light (1000g), medium (1400g), and heavy-duty (1800g) variants, we have the right Turfmesh grade for your project’s specific load requirements.

Understanding Ground Reinforcement

The performance of Turfmesh hinges on the establishment of a robust interlock between the polyethylene matrix and the root mass of the turf, a process referred to as ‘bio-geocomposite formation’. Installation is optimally performed during spring or summer to leverage rapid grass growth, facilitating this critical interlock.

The mesh’s key technical characteristic is its oscillated, high-tensile structure, which effectively dissipates point loads across a wider surface area, significantly increasing the shear resistance and ultimate bearing capacity of the reinforced grass stratum. The varying grades (1000g/m², 1400g/m², 1800g/m²) are engineered to accommodate increasing levels of frequency and load, from pedestrian access to occasional HGV use, with the 1800g variant being appropriate for the temporary deployment of heavy vehicles like fire engines and refuse trucks.

Furthermore, the system is designed to be SUDS-compliant, ensuring that surface water infiltration and attenuation remain unimpeded. The proprietary, brown-coloured surface features of the mesh contribute to the system’s high dynamic friction, a property tested to BS 7976-2, providing a safety margin that is over 33% better than comparative mesh solutions prior to full grass establishment.
