The Background

The Centenary Quay Project will turn the former Vosper Thornycroft shipyard into a bustling riverside development on the banks of the river Itchen in Southampton.

This major 12 hectare project started in July 2008 and involves the demolition of several buildings. The works will also involve the excavation and remediation of the whole site, with some 200,000 cubic meters of excavation and processing of arisings for re-use on site.

Our Client’s Requirements

A sustainable solution for the redevelopment of Vosper Thorntcroft shipyard.

A contamination indicator was required that would signify the break between new clean fill and old remediated ground.

This is vital to provide adequate warning to protect anyone carrying out future excavations. The approximate quantity of geotextile separator required was >80,000m2.

Our Value Engineered solution

The Alert® developed by Geosynthetics was the obvious choice for practical, commercial and technical reasons.

1. It is available in large rolls of 450m2 to minimise laps and installation time.
2. Produced in a vivid orange colour, Alert® is designed to be clearly seen as a warning layer.
3. It is the most competitive bright orange contamination indicator geotextile available in the UK.

In opting for Alert® for this application, EDSR were able to achieve both the practical indicator function as well as the proven high strength separation characteristics of our Rhyno® product with the benefit of a rapid installation due to the large industry standard roll sizes.
