Erosion mats are designed to provide immediate surface protection and long-term stabilisation of soils subject to hydraulic or environmental stress. They are commonly specified in accordance with guidance from CIRIA (e.g. C683) for erosion control and vegetation establishment.
Typically formed from either biodegradable natural fibres or durable synthetic materials, erosion mats create a protective layer over the soil. This reduces the impact of rain splash, slows surface water flow, and helps retain soil particles in place, significantly reducing sediment loss and improving overall slope stability.
In reinforced applications, three-dimensional turf reinforcement mats (TRMs) provide additional tensile strength and confinement, enabling the system to resist higher flow velocities and shear stresses once vegetation is established. This makes them suitable for critical infrastructure applications such as channels, spillways, and reinforced slopes.
At Geosynthetics, our range of erosion mats includes high flow silt fencing, the Enkamat erosion control blanket, and Pyramat – our highest-performance turf reinforcement matting.
