StrataGrid™ - Knitted Polyester Uniaxial Geogrid

StrataGrid™ SG is a uniaxial geogrid that is placed into the ground to strengthen and stabilise weak soil. It is made from high-tenacity, high-molecular-weight polyester yarns woven into a grid, which spreads loads through the soil and helps it hold together under pressure. A black, UV-stabilised coating shields the grid from sunlight, chemicals, and wear, so it can provide long-term ground stabilisation in any environment. 

By strengthening the soil itself, StrataGrid™ makes it possible to build steeper slopes, embankments, and retaining walls on soft ground where this would normally not be possible. This provides a reliable and cost-effective alternative to using large concrete structures or heavy foundations.

StrataGrid™ is built to perform in tough ground conditions, including wet areas, aggressive soils, and during installation. It comes in a range of strength grades, so the right level of support can be chosen for each project.

StrataGrid™ has been proven both in laboratory testing and through thousands of real-world installations over many years. It is commonly used to strengthen slopes, support retaining walls, and reinforce the ground beneath roads, paths, and other structures.

Your StrataGrid™ Questions Answered

Stratagrid is a uniaxial geogrid manufactured from knitted polyester. It is available in strengths from 40kN/m to 400kN/m although the most typical strengths used for constructing Stratagrid reinforced soil slopes would be either 40kN/m, 60kN/m and 80kN/m

The Stratagrid is laid in horizontal layers (typically between 300mm and 600mm apart vertically) with compacted site won or imported backfill between each layer. The interaction between the Stratagrid and compacted backfilll stiffens the ‘reinforced soil block’ enabling far steeper face angles to be achieved than without the use of a geogrid. Without a geogrid a soil would typically stand at an approximate face angle of 18 degrees but by incorporating geogrids layers as described face angles of 70 degrees are regularly achieved.

Where a Stratagrid solution is appropriate it is a much more cost effective and sustainable solution that a steel or concrete solution.

Once the Stratagrid is buried in layers within the backlfill it is protected from UV radiation, so any degradation is minimal. Stratagrid can be used to design solutions with a design life of up to 120 years

The pH of soils in the ground can reduce the strength of Stratagrid. This is accounted for in the design process by applying a ‘reduction factor’ to the strength of the Stratagrid.

Yes. Stratagrid has a been independently tested and accordingly holds British Board of Agrement (BBA) certification

Some minor settlement of a Stratagrid is to be expected. However, the way a Stratagrid slope behaves means that is highly unlikely to fail catastrophically (except in areas of the world subject to earthquakes etc!) If ‘failure’ does occur then various remedial measures could be explored.

Reinforcing Soil with StrataGrid

StrataGrid™ SG Uniaxial geogrids achieve their exceptional performance through a highly engineered manufacturing process. High-tenacity polyester yarn is knitted into a stable grid, which provides tensile reinforcement capacity predominantly in one principal direction (uniaxial). 

The polyester, having a high molecular weight, ensures minimal creep and long-term design life. This knitted structure creates a network of apertures that interlocks with the soil or aggregate infill. This interlock generates the frictional resistance needed for high tensile strength and soil reinforcement. 

A final, UV-stabilised saturation coating is applied to the knitted grid, which locks the yarns in place and provides additional chemical resistance, making the product mechanically and chemically durable even in aggressive soil or aqueous environments. By mechanically stabilising the soil mass, StrataGrid™ allows for the construction of steep slopes, embankments, and retaining walls that would otherwise be unstable, offering an efficient and cost-effective alternative to conventional methods.
