EnkaMat™: Permanent Erosion Control and Turf Reinforcement

Sometimes natural vegetation alone isn’t enough to guarantee ground stability. Our EnkaMat™ is the original and most widely used Turf Reinforcement Mat (TRM), designed to protect against erosion caused by wind and water. Since its introduction in the 1970s, this Rolled Erosion-Control Product (RECP) has provided permanent protection, instantly stabilising soil while supporting healthy vegetation for years to come.

What is EnkaMat™?

EnkaMat™ is a durable erosion control mat made from continuous nylon monofilaments, woven together to form a flexible, three-dimensional structure. With 95% of the mat being open space, it allows soil, mulch, and plant roots to interact easily, enabling roots to become securely anchored in the ground. This design makes EnkaMat™ one of the most effective mats for strengthening roots, reinforcing turf, and preventing soil erosion.

Unlike other types of erosion control protection, EnkaMat™ is made from nylon, so it won’t float when submerged in water. It conforms quickly to any soil surface, providing immediate protection against erosion caused by wind and water. This makes it a highly cost-effective solution since it requires little maintenance after installation.

As the world’s leading TRM, it has a history dating back to the 1970s and is a trusted component in civil engineering projects. EnkaMat™’s performance and quality have been validated by independent bodies, including the Army Corps of Engineers (ERDC) and the German Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau (BAW).

When erosion becomes a problem – and why turf reinforcement matting is the solution

Erosion occurs when soil particles are displaced before plants can establish their roots. EnkaMat™ offers essential protection during this critical time. Its flexible design is placed directly on prepared soil and secured, preventing soil loss as vegetation grows.

The mat’s strength lies in its structure: continuous monofilaments fused at their intersections to create an entangled, resilient three-dimensional web with open spaces that trap seed and soil, offers an excellent substrate for hydraulic mulch infill, and more importantly, promotes deep root growth.

As vegetation develops, roots become entangled in the mat, creating a reinforced composite layer that is far stronger than turf or grass alone. This composite system, functioning as a true Turf Reinforcement Mat (TRM), provides lasting stability and can be used above, at, or below water levels. For areas needing extra stability, the EnkaMat™ R version includes additional reinforcement with a high-tenacity polyester geogrid.

Why choose EnkaMat™ for erosion control?

Immediate Erosion Protection

Delivers instant soil stability and large area holding capacity for soil.

Cost-Effective Solution

Provides a very cost-efficient, permanent solution that requires no maintenance.

Unrivalled Root Reinforcement

95% of the structure is open to intertwine with roots, creating a stable cover.

High Shear Resistance

Offers superior resistance to the tractive forces of water flow.

Non-Buoyant Structure

Made from nylon to eliminate the buoyancy factor associated with submerged conditions.

Easy Installation

The matting is simple to handle and install, conforming to virtually any surface or soil profile.

Stimulates Growth

The open design and excellent substrate stimulate the swift growth of vegetation.

Proven Durability

Manufactured for proven durability and UV stability for long-term project success.

Your EnkaMat™ Questions Answered

Yes. The 70## series is suitable for intermittent submersion, assuming it’s been secured properly and has established vegetation. The 72## series can be filled with stone for increased resilience to more frequent flow. The A20 series provides an instant hard armoured finish whilst still providing ~30% vegetated cover. Basically, we have solutions for all conditions, so just let us know the site-specifics, and we’ll propose the solution option(s).

As the original and globally proven solution for over 45 years, EnkaMat™ provides high-performance reinforcement that outperforms standard alternatives. Manufactured from polyamide filaments, it is significantly stronger and more resistant to installation damage than polypropylene options. Its unique 95% open structure allows for a higher void ratio, providing double the monofilament length at the same weight to ensure twice the root anchorage of competing products. This high-void design allows roots to intertwine deeply with the mat, creating unrivalled reinforcement and superior shear resistance. Unlike buoyant alternatives, EnkaMat™ remains stable during hydraulic events, providing immediate erosion control from the moment it is installed.

Yes, but if a living/green finish is required, the soil must be capable of supporting vegetation.

The 70## and 72## series are designed to become an integral part of the root system and so covered by soil and vegetation. As long as the vegetation is established, they can be used in all situations.

Yes. EnkaMat™ provides a high-performance, low-carbon alternative to traditional concrete riprap or stone-filled gabions. By preventing soil erosion and promoting long-term vegetative cover, it creates stable, permanent habitats for local flora and fauna. Unlike biodegradable options such as coir or jute, which typically require replacement every one to five years, EnkaMat™ is a non-biodegradable polyamide solution that requires zero ongoing maintenance. Its durable structure ensures the system does not break down over time, offering the potential for recovery and recycling at the end of its service life.

Subject to approval, yes. However it’s not suitable for us near livestock such as cows and pigs, as they pull and root as they graze. It’s fine for use near horses and geese, which only eat the above ground portion of the grass.

100 years design life. Again, EnkaMat™ should not be exposed at the surface.

Theoretically yes, but we do not recommend it.

Subject to correct installation, no.
