The Background

Leicester City Council contacted Geosynthetics limited as they wanted to create a new footpath and cycle way from Saffron lane in Leicester and throughout the city as part of a £970,000 scheme to help encourage more people to walk and cycle through the city.

This scheme was funded through the Transforming Cities Fund to help fund improvements to public transport and enable more cycling and walking routes into the surrounding neighbourhoods and the city centre.

Our Client’s Requirements

A new foot path & cycle track for Leicester City Council.

The Saffron Lane corridor is a significant public transport corridor between the city centre, the south side of the city and the extension of the built-up area of the city into the County around Wigston.

The corridor extends into the city centre along part of Aylestone Road, which is the subject of another TCF scheme. The current scheme can be seen as the first phase of a larger scheme which will ultimately extend along the whole length of Saffron Lane.

Our Value Engineered solution

Large sections of the new footpath/cycleway would fall within the rooting environment of established trees.

Leicester city council needed a solution that would spread the loadings pedestrians and cyclists as well as possible vehicular traffic while allowing water and oxygen to the roots below.

The Cycleway would need to be created to a 3m width to accommodate both cyclists and pedestrians.
We put forward 100mm of Cellweb® as part of the Cellweb System with Treetex at the base of construction and infilled with 4/20mm clean angular stone.

Our technical team were on hand for advice and guidance on build-up and installation and we were able to attend site to give onsite support.

– Cellweb® TRP is the only established guaranteed tree root protection system on the market in the UK.

– It Complies with ‘BS 5837: 2012, Trees in relation to design and demolition/construction recommendations.

– It is the only independently tested system in the United Kingdom.

– Our in-house tree root protection team will provide technical support both over the phone and on site.

– Our in-house qualified civil engineers will provide site specific technical recommendations.
