StrataGrid™ – New Mill Road – Retaining Wall
- Location
- Land off New Mill Road, Cardigan, SA43 1QT
- Contractor
- Jones Brothers (Henllan) Ltd
The Background
The project involves a regular-shaped development site extending to approximately 4.99 acres of permanent pastureland. Benefitting from significant frontage onto New Mill Road, the site is generally level with excellent access. The objective of the scheme is to develop 51 affordable units, including flats, bungalows, and two-storey houses
Our Client’s Requirements
Our client needed to prepare the rural land through the necessary earthworks and retaining structures to provide a stable framework for the new housing units. Although the site appeared level, detailed inspections revealed that the former grazing land sloped in multiple directions.
To facilitate the development, the project required:
-
Re-levelling the entire site to create a suitable build platform.
-
Designing and building a retaining wall to introduce a two-tier system for the houses.
-
A structural solution that could be seamlessly integrated with Tobermore retaining wall systems.
Our Value Engineered solution
Geosynthetics Ltd proposed the use of Stratagrid™, a high-performance geogrid range that is fully approved for use within Tobermore retaining wall systems. This approval provides developers with complete confidence that the reinforcement will function as required within the specific wall design.
Stratagrid™ offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional “hard” solutions like reinforced concrete structures. By utilising this soil reinforcement method, the project required fewer raw materials, leading to significant economic advantages.
To ensure the project stayed on schedule, Geosynthetics Ltd provided a rapid response:
-
Product Approval: Stratagrid™ is Tobermore-approved, ensuring the designs were clear and easy for the contractor to follow.
-
Rapid Supply: We quoted and supplied the material to the site within a few days of purchase, thanks to our readily available stock.
-
Technical Excellence: The solution maintained full structural performance while significantly reducing overall project costs.
